There’s a new diet in town. It’s called the Paleo Diet. Paleo actually came from the word Paleolithic which is popularly known as Stone Age. From that, you would have a hint as to what the diet is all about.
This rather gut-wrenching diet created by Loren Cordain, a Colorado State University professor and researcher, is also referred to as the primal diet, the caveman’s diet or the Stone Age diet, is designed to encourage people to plunge to their roots and take on the challenge of imitating what their hunter-gather predecessors supposedly devoured (nuts, vegetables, fruits, seafood and meat) during the prehistoric age.
That was quite a lot to take in.
Now, for those who are on the crossroads of deciding whether to try the diet or not, here are some interesting, overwhelming and absolutely outrageous information about the caveman’s diet.
Fact #1: The principle is based on genetics.
According to Prof. Cordain, adhering to the guidelines set by the Paleo diet aligns people to the evolutionary demands that formed the modern-day genes which has a positive influence on a person’s overall health and well-being.
The scope of the diet is mainly focused on lowering the glycemic index of the body, achieving a healthy proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, increasing the body’s nutrient and vitamin absorption and finally, consuming foods that are balanced by carbohydrates, fat and protein.
Fact #2: Not everyone believes in the diet.
Experts tend to disagree with what the Paleo diet has been bragging about.
In reality, the benefits are not scientifically proven. There are no actual bases that the Paleo diet actually works.
There were small studies conducted stating that those who opted for the Paleo diet shown a healthier blood sugar than those who opted the Mediterranean diet. However, these aren’t enough to provide strong proof that the diet essentially made a difference.
Fact #3: The menu consists of anything taken from the Earth.
Similar to what our antecedents did, you are required to eat grass-fed livestock and homegrown organic greens and crops. As much as possible, chemicals like antibiotics and pesticides are out of the equation since they did not exist during those times.
To give you a more vivid picture of what your meal would look like on a daily basis, here’s a list:
- Fresh fruits
- Lean meat like pork, chicken, lean beef, buffalo, and turkey
- Plant-derived oils like coconut, olive, grapeseed, and olive
- Non-starchy veggies like cauliflower, spinach, broccoli, lettuce, green beans, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage
- Nuts (excluding peanuts) like pistachios, almonds, pecans, cashews, and walnuts
- Sunflower and pumpkin seeds
So far, the list is quite acceptable nevertheless limited.
Fact #4: There are tons of foods that you are not allowed to eat.
Just to make it clear, the picture shown above is just an example of what you have to permanently eliminate from your diet. Permanently (Cue in excessive sobbing).
If you were struck by what you should eat, wait until you see the things that you are commanded NOT to eat.
- Thou shall not eat ANY form of grain ranging from rice, oats, barley, and wheat. In layman’s term, you must not eat granola bars, cereals, bread, bagels, crackers, and even pasta.
- Thou shall not consume dairy products – ALL OF IT. Meaning, you should discard milk, cheese, yogurt, and sadly, ice cream.
- Thou shall not purchase trans-fats and processed foods like french fries, macaroni and cheese, doughnuts, or fruit snacks.
- Thou shall ignore starchy veggies like corn and potato. Popcorn, tortillas, and corn chips are not exempted from this list.
- Thou shall not consume beans or legumes. This technically means that baked beans, peanuts, peanut butter, soy foods, tofu, and even hummus are opted out from the list.
- Thou shall not consider buying ribs, ground meat, salami, hotdogs, pepperoni, and bologna no matter how much you are dying to.
- Thou shall never include sugars like cakes, honey, candy, and cookies, and salty foods like soy sauce, pretzels, chips, and canned goods in your meal.
Majority of what’s listed here are foods that people usually consume on a daily basis. Therefore, if you think that you cannot handle a day without eating cereals for breakfast, it is best to reconsider if this diet will work to your advantage.
Fact #5: The regimen is an expensive lifestyle.
Since you have excluded a lot of foods that are inexpensive like beans and soy, you thereby welcome foods that, according to a study made by BMJ Open, costs almost 30 cents for every serving. A typical example of which is, discarding your favorite peanut butter for a $13 Paleo-recommended almond butter.
And probably the worst part of it is that, the Paleo diet is a form of a lifestyle and not just an easy fix that you can let go of once you’ve reached your desired weight or figure. It does not work that way. Once you start it, you’re in it for the long haul; otherwise, there would be consequences.
Fact #6: You are implied to walk away from what you’re used to.
Technically, that means you have to look away from any sort of contemporary foodstuff that, in all honesty, you have been eating all your life. All the junkies that you love to munch on during TV nights – pizza, popcorn, fried chicken, chips, alcohol, sodas, or whatever your comfort food is, are complete no-nos once you devote yourself to the diet.
So anything that is packed, canned, bagged, jarred, and boxed, are to be avoided by all means. Again, that diet is based on what the Paleolithic men ate so you should expect things to be raw and unforgiving.
Fact #7: The diet is not merely aimed on food.
If you want to eat like a Stone Age man, you have to live the way they used to – always moving. But that doesn’t mean that you have to live inside a cave and wear animal skin.
No. Absolutely not.
What it meant is that you have to adapt the activities that the early men are accustomed to. This would include, by basics, walking and running – a lot of walking and a lot of running. Since it is part of your genetic code, walking and other forms of rigorous exercises that would squeeze up more than 4,000 calories a day, wouldn’t be a problem for you.
But then again, with the overwhelming foods that were banned from your diet, how in the world would you gather energy to sweat out 4,000 calories a day?
Fact #8: Protein ingestion is increased.
Paleo significantly equates to protein, lots and lots of protein. However, too much of something is destructive.
In this case, the foods that are allowed to be consumed in the Paleo diet are mostly comprised of protein-rich foods. Experts believe that if you consume plentiful protein and lack carbohydrates, the process will damage the kidneys and may lead to osteoporosis. And since the current meat industry has higher amounts of saturated fats as compared to what our ancestors consumed, the increased risk of heart disease is variably high.
There are two undeniable truths about the Paleo diet:
First, it is a complicated means to stay healthy and lose weight. And second, with the evidence of modernity, it is just impossible to mimic how the early men used to live and eat. The diet firmly demands tons of planning, prepping, and resolving. Seriously, grass-fed animals are like the Titanic pearl in their existence and by far very expensive.
With that, this article urges you to think twice or even thrice before you transform yourself into a Stone Age man or woman.
