Alright, so there aren’t 130 million people in Australia, but studies show that there are approximately 130 million people signed up, right now, to workout in gyms and fitness centers worldwide.  If that sounds like a lot, it is.  It is also one of the top reasons that people decide that joining a gym just isn’t for them.  Sometimes it’s the ‘other people’ that make it the wrong environment to exercise.  In fact, feeling ‘out of place’ is one of the top reasons people give for skipping the gym membership.  This doesn’t mean that they aren’t exercising; they just prefer to do it somewhere else.

What’s the Harm in a Home Workout?

It’s no secret that one of the draws of the gym is that the equipment is generally up to the latest industry standards, and clearly out of the price range of the average home fitness enthusiast.  It’s unlikely you will harm yourself on the ‘info-mercial’ gym equipment that you see perfectly chiseled celebrities demonstrating very early in the morning and very late in the evening. However, it’s also unlikely that it will ever get you looking just that way.  It’s just not as efficient as the professional-grade equipment, and gyms know this.

What Should I Put in My Home Gym Then?

There is no one answer to what equipment you will need at home for a good workout. This depends a great deal on what goals you have for your fitness. What you should NOT be doing is investing in middle-of-the-road equipment that will be outdated and on your Ebay page in no time.  When nobody wants your old gym equipment, you can read up on how to recycle it safely (a popular topic apparently since the majority of poor quality home gym equipment ends up in hard rubbish in no time). You can also look into options such as renting home gym equipment.

Renting Equipment and Constant Updates

People like the idea of having access to the latest, most updated information and equipment at all times.  A great option for keeping up with a professional quality fitness program at home is to rent equipment for 6 months to 1 year at a time. Take advantage of not owning the equipment to update on a regular basis.  With rentals you have the freedom to try out options and see what you like, all without putting down the money to buy.

Will I Save Money Renting?

If you are one of the rare people who invests in a piece of home gym equipment and then truly uses it every day, probably not.  However, if you are like the majority of Australians with a garage filled with home gym equipment ‘fails’ then it might be right for you to try rentals.  Take some time to analyze what kind of fitness routine you would like to begin and get started right away- this time with the right equipment.

No More Excuses

Many people like to work out in the gym but if they are just starting out, they may be intimidated by the other people in the gym. Some people shy away from changing in front of other women in the locker room. Others feel self-concious of their bodies in front of those who have been working out and looking buff. When you work out at home, you have no more excuses. You can exercise in the privacy of your home wearing whatever is more comfortable for you without being afraid of being judged by others. Because you work out at home, you have the ability to insert these work out sessions whenever you have free time, or add it to your daily routine like when watching news.

How about you? Do you prefer to workout at the gym or at home?
