When attempting to lose weight it can be difficult to know how to achieve your goal. Sometimes you will believe certain methods that are simply not going to get the desired results.

Lets look at some of the more common weight loss myths:

Weight loss myth #1

“The more you weigh, the more intense your workout should be.”

Even though an intense workout is great for weight loss there are certain facts you should be aware of first.

For example we all have different fitness levels for a start, so some people will find it impossible to workout at too high an intensity. Especially if you have been inactive for a number of years.

Rather than focusing on the intensity just try to push yourself that little bit more each day. You will surely see big improvements in your fitness and your weight will be reduced too.

“I can eat what I want and still lose weight.”

Now although you may know someone who manages to eat what they want and stay in shape, in reality they may have a number of issues going on inside their body such as high cholesterol.

A healthy diet does not consist of pizza, burgers and other forms of junk food. By all means have the occasional treat but you need to use a little moderation, especially if you are one of the unlucky ones who put on weight simply looking at those treats.

Weight loss myth #3

“Skipping meals is a great way to lose weight.”

Although you may lose weight to begin, you may in fact end up being heavier than when you started due to your metabolism stalling.

The reason for this is that your body will believe that you are literally starving so will lower your metabolism in an effort to keep hold of those fat reserves.

Once you start eating normally again you will likely gain the lost weight plus a little extra as your metabolism will still be running slow.

“Cut calories and lose the weight fast.”

If you are overeating then cutting back on your calorie consumption is a good idea. However if you are eating your recommended daily intake then cutting your intake is a bad idea as you may actually end up gaining weight in the long run.

As with skipping meals, cutting calories may cause your metabolism to run slower than usual.

“I’m only fat due to genetics.”

Although your genetics can play a part in how much you weigh, how you were raised is more likely to have an effect later on in life.

If your family loved to eat takeaways in front of the TV then you are more likely to do exactly the same later in life.

This is not to say that you have to accept your weight, even if your parents are overweight you can certainly change your weight.

“You have to give up your favorite foods to lose weight.”

If you want to lose weight you most certainly should not be eating treats every day, however you can have the occasional treat.

Depriving yourself of your favorite foods will make you want to quit your new healthy lifestyle so a treat meal now and then will help to keep you motivated.

“I am too fat to lose weight.”

Sometimes people want to see instant results so if they are particularly overweight it can be hard to visualise a slimmer version.

Just remember that to lose weight you need to take it one step at a time. You cannot expect to lose the weight overnight but by making small changes you can see big differences over time.

“I can’t lose weight, I have tried before.”

Even if you have tried and failed in the past does not mean you can’t succeed.

Weight loss is not easy but if you can stay dedicated and make those small changes then you will eventually reach your goal.
