Why buy those weight loss DVDs when you can sleep your fats away?

Being overweight is a condition suffered by many people around the world. In our present time where the pressure and competition is up high, people will try to squeeze time to exercise while trying to control their diet. Excess food intake, lack of physical activities, hormonal disorder, illness, medications and even stress are some of the common causes of being overweight that if taken lightly would lead to obesity. The problem with being overweight is not just that it limits our physical movements but also the health conditions that one would suffer like diabetes, heart diseases and other cancer causing cells.

Lack of sleep can cause weight problems

Another factor that came into studies is the relevance of sleep deprivation in gaining weight. Observe how upon waking up in the morning with not enough sleep can make your body crave for high energy dense foods like sugar and carbohydrates. This is your body’s reaction to fuel the energy deficiency you missed while sleeping. In recent studies, it shows that sleep deprivation affects your Leptin and Ghrelin levels. Leptin is responsible for sending signals to the brain when you are full while Ghrelin is the hormone that stimulates your appetite. Lack of sleep shows with lower Leptin levels while increasing Ghrelin levels. This explains why you are never fully satisfied with your food intake when you are deprived of sleep as it not replenishes your desired energy level. In a sleep deprived state, the body doesn’t have the control of your food intake thus making one susceptible to eat a lot more that what the body just needs.

A good sleep can help

An adult person would need at least 7 to 8 hours of quality, undisturbed sleep. This will give the opportunity for your body to relax and recuperate. One should have to start the habit to have a good night’s sleep. Here’s how:

  • Don’t stay up too late, follow your body clock, if your mind tells you need to sleep already then you better do. Contrary to popular belief, stress does not help in losing weight; the hormones that respond to stress make it difficult for people to lose weight. Sometimes, people have the tendency to eat more because of lack of sleep; thinking that they need extra energy for the rest of the day.
  • Take the grand ceremony of preparing to go to sleep, wash up, brush up and dress up. There is nothing more relaxing than going to sleep feeling fresh and clean. It also sets your body in a ritual that you can do so it can shift from active to passive mode.
  • Medical doctors also advised not to take water before sleeping as it has the tendency for you to wake up in the middle of the night to pee, therefore disrupting sleep.
  • Don’t eat a big meal before going to sleep. At least provide your body enough hours to digest your food as sleeping with a full stomach will only stress your body in digestion when it should a time allocated for recovery.

Other relaxing tools that can be used to promote a relaxing sleep without the intake of any medication are aromatherapy candles and fragrances. This proves to be effective in promoting deep sleep. Other than aromatherapy candles, apples can be used as an alternative. Try placing an apple on your bedside when you sleep. The apple’s fragrance stimulates your body to be relaxed while you sleep. You can also make use of slope pillow. These pillows are designed to support your neck and head area. It is tested to relieve you of muscular pain around the neck sustained during sleep.
