How to Cure FeverWhile most of the time you can simply ride it out at home, there are steps you can take to help cure fever and to make your recovery as comfortable as possible.  Fever is usually accompanied by muscle pain, headaches, nausea, vomiting, chills, and diarrhea. Needless to say, having a fever can be a very unpleasant experience.
When your body suffers from an infection, the immune system responds by increasing body temperature.  A fever is an indication that your body is waging a battle against the invading virus or bacteria.  It is our natural defense mechanism against infections.  Most doctors agree that, more often than not, there is no need to cure fever, especially if it’s mild; it should be left alone to run its course.  As long as the temperature does not go higher than 102 degrees Fahrenheit (~38.8 C) for adults and 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39.4 C) for children, you should give your body sufficient time to rid itself of the infection.  You can cure fever at home to ease discomfort and when it starts to climb higher than what is considered safe.

Simple Ways to Cure Fever

Take the Heat

It is best to leave the fever alone and let your body wage its war against the infection if the fever is mild.  Unless you’re running a fever for more than three days, you can hold off on taking medications.  Of course, it is important that you monitor your fever and other symptoms closely.  Regularly check your temperature; take ibuprofen or acetaminophen if worsens or lasts more than a few days to ease the associated aches and help cure fever.

Drink Up

Fever and its associated symptoms, especially vomiting and diarrhea, can quickly cause dehydration.  To help your body fight off the infection and to cure fever more effectively, increase your fluid intake.  You can also take small sips of ginger ale or suck on ice chips if your stomach won’t cooperate.

Get Comfy

Letting your fever run its course does not necessarily mean you can’t be comfortable.  Keep your room cool by leaving a window open or using a fan.  Wear light clothing; avoid wrapping yourself up in a heavy, thick blanket because this is counterproductive.  Place a cold, wet towel on your forehead to help cool you down.  It’s okay to take a quick bath in lukewarm water, a sponge bath using a cool, wet cloth, or even a quick cold shower, as long as your fever is mild.  This would help lower your temperature gradually while you’re taking other steps to cure fever.

Suspend the Supplements

If you are taking iron or zinc supplements or multivitamins that contain either one or both, stop using them when you have a fever.  Iron may cause the body additional stress that it does not need while it is focusing most of its energy on getting rid of the infection and a fever prevents the body from properly absorbing zinc.

Get Medical Attention

When any you experience any of the following, you should see a doctor immediately: your temperature goes above 104 degrees Fahrenheit; your fever remains high for more than three days; you get confused; your neck becomes stiff; you have trouble breathing; you experience convulsions; you suffer from diarrhea or vomiting; or urinating becomes painful.  The presentation of these symptoms, especially after you have been taking steps to cure fever, may indicate a more serious problem that needs immediate medical attention.

In Summary: Cure Fever to Ease Discomfort and Only When Necessary

A mild fever is often a good sign that lets you know your body is actively battling an infection; it indicates that your natural defense mechanism is working as it should.  You should only attempt to cure fever to alleviate discomfort and when your symptoms are either not showing any signs of improving or getting worse.
