How to Cure a Hangover – 10 Tips
1
Looking to cure a hangover? This page is for you. You had your fun the evening before. You pay for it the morning after with a major hangover. You downed cocktails and straight liquor shots, one after another. Now it’s time to learn how to cure a hangover, but first you have to understand what’s happening to your body aside from the inebriation, your body responds in numerous ways: frequent urination causes dehydration which leads to thirst, lightheadedness, and dizziness; irritation of the stomach lining causes increased production of acid which leads to stomach pain, vomiting, and nausea; a fall in blood sugar level leads to weakness, fatigue, mood changes, and concentration problems; and sleepiness combined with poor quality of sleep leads to grogginess and more fatigue.
You wake up with all these symptoms and you think another glass of alcohol, a cup of coffee, or greasy foods should make your head and stomach feel right again, right? If you didn’t get tanked-up with co-workers or you weren’t seen getting sloshed by one, then you better call in sick to work because these remedies will not work. Here are some cures that might help you feel less horrible:
How To Cure a Hangover
Forty Winks
If you can afford it, just sleep off your hangover. Your hangover symptoms should diminish between 8 and 24 hours after your last drink. Stay in bed, catch some more zzz’s, and maybe you can dream away your symptoms and you will feel less crappy when you wake up.
Bottoms Up
This time, take a swig of water or a sports drink and do it frequently. Your night of indulgence did not only strip you of your inhibitions but of your fluids, too. You may not remember the frequent trips to the bathroom you made last night but your hangover symptoms are a good reminder that your body is dehydrated and you need to “refuel” with water, and lots of it.
Caffeinated Cure
For some people, drinking coffee helps treat headaches and migraines. If you must, just keep the caffeine to a minimum as coffee will only further dehydrate your body; make sure to drink a lot of water with your coffee to offset its dehydrating effects.
Get Cracking
Your tiredness and irritability are caused by low blood sugar levels. Instead of working to compensate for lowered levels of blood sugar, your liver is busy metabolizing the alcohol you chugged for hours. You have to eat to get your blood sugar levels back to normal but when your stomach won’t cooperate, this can be a dilemma. You can replenish your glucose by eating crackers or toast.
Get Popping
Pop a pain med to relieve the pounding in your head. Stay away from acetaminophen, such as Tylenol, however. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen are safe to take and won’t damage your liver that’s already working overtime.
Start Pounding
While sweating out the alcohol through exercise is a myth (the body metabolizes one drink within one hour of intake), engaging in physical activity releases endorphins which can be an effective mood booster and cobweb remover. Again, just don’t forget to hydrate.
Pace Yourself
Prevention really is better than cure. All the drunken fun you can have will not be worth being dreadfully hung-over the next day, not to mention the liver damage it will cause. Indulge, but nurse your indulgence, so to speak. Firstly, don’t drink on an empty stomach; eating before drinking will help slow down the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream and, thus, also slow down your intoxication. Secondly, limit yourself to one drink per hour to allow your body to completely metabolize the alcohol instead of “drowning” it. Thirdly, drink a glass of water with every beer, glass of wine, or shot of any liquor. These should help reduce your hangover symptoms, if not completely prevent them.
So there you have it, toast to a fun night and a morning free of hangover.
