Home Remedies for Back Pain

Home Remedies for Back PainIn addition to pain medication, there are other forms of back pain remedies that are actually more effective.  These back pain remedies can get you back on your feet quicker than pain medications, or when combined with pain medications.
If you have ever been on a very long drive or flight, tried to lift something very heavy the wrong way, or twisted your body too much during a round of golf, then you are more than familiar with the misery of having back pain.  Whatever the cause of your back pain, bad habits, sports injuries, or accidents, the effect is the same.  You become like a machine that’s out of order; you become unproductive at work and performing simple daily activities can be torture.  Mercifully, there are back pain remedies that work incredibly well in providing long-term relief and which are actually supported by science.

End Your Suffering with These Back Pain Remedies

 Don’t Stop Moving

Staying immobile in bed for even a single day is actually counterproductive.  If the pain is tolerable, walk on a level surface for at least 10 minutes every two or three hours; walk briskly if you can and swing your arms.  If you must lie down, change positions every half an hour; if an activity requires you to sit down for a prolonged period, take frequent breaks and move around.  Of course, you should take it easy on your back.  Avoid activities that are strenuous, but keep moving to keep your muscles strong.  Proper self-care is a crucial complement to back pain remedies.

Grab Two Tennis Balls

Massaging your back muscles to relieve the tension is one of the most helpful back pain remedies.  Give yourself with the help of two tennis balls stuffed into a sock.  Start off with a hot bath or shower followed by easy stretching exercises to help relax your body.  Carefully lie on your back on the floor, bend your knees, and keep your feet flat on the floor.  Put the sock with the tennis balls under your lower back and with each ball on either side of your spine, breathe in deeply, and relax your body into the balls for a few seconds.  Breathe out slowly.  Repeat. Alternatively, you can visit a beauty salon and get a massage.

Hot and Cold

Use a hot pack, a heat wrap, or an electric heating pad to apply warmth to your lower back for at least 15 minutes and no longer than 20 minutes at a single time.  Taking a hot bath or shower also provides pain relief.  You can also ice the affected area for ten minutes ever hour on the first day and then every three hours on the second day using an ice pack, a frozen bag of vegetables, or a towel dampened with cold water and frozen in a plastic bag.  Either one or both are effective back pain remedies.

Shrug Off The Stress

Stress and back pain are thick as thieves and, unfortunately, they feed off each other.  Back pain causes you stress; the stress makes your muscles tense and this worsens your back pain.  It’s a vicious cycle that you can bring to a stop with stress management techniques.  Learning yoga, relaxing breathing techniques, progressive muscle relaxation, and meditation are great back pain remedies you can do at home.

Treat Your Back Right

While suffering from back pain, avoid activities that involve bending or reaching and try not to do any lifting either.  When sitting down, support your lower back with a lumbar roll, small pillow, or a rolled-up towel.  When in bed, lie on your side and place a pillow between your knees.  When you have to stand up for a certain period of time, have one foot on a low stool.  Back pain remedies also involve knowing how to treat your back right.

In Summary: Back Pain Remedies and Prevention

After your back pain has gone, avoid activities that strain your back and practice proper posture at all times.  Strengthen your core muscles with the right kinds of exercise.  While these back pain remedies are effective, it is important to adopt habits that will prevent recurrence of your back pain.
