There have always been exercise fads that promise consumers they will shed pounds quickly and effortlessly, but the reality of it is, they are simply trends that don’t work. A fad is a trend that is characterized by its energy and enthusiasm around an idea that some type of change or idea will be beneficial for the consumer. In most cases, the benefits are unrealistic and in some situations, dangerous. The fitness industry is one of the most targeted arenas for such trends. Working Out in the Cold

In the 1970’s a popular exercise fad was working out in the cold. A research study in 1977 revealed that this form of exercising was not as effective as originally thought. Six obese men were placed in a chamber with temperatures of negative 22 degrees Fahrenheit and had to exercise for three and half hours, for ten consecutive days. After ten days the men lost slightly over eight pounds. This was attribute to water loss, however. The final results of the study showed the fad to be not only ineffective, but dangerous to the health of the participants.

Jumping Rope for Weight Loss

A study was done to determine if jumping rope had an effect on the regulation of appetite hormones. Participants in the study were monitored before, during and after a session of jumping rope to verify that the idea of jumping rope could actually help with building muscle, while regulating appetite. The study concluded that this form of exercising did not reduce how hungry the participants felt and in fact the extreme exercising on an empty stomach increased their hunger and only temporarily toned the muscles in legs and arms.


The latest fitness fad is Prancercise. Invented by Joanna Rohrback in 1989, a video of her exercising with what she terms as “prancercise” went viral on the internet and is getting much more attention than may be deserving. Researchers have viewed the video and compared Prancercise to other forms of exercise fads, such as jazzercise. A registered kinesiologist, Steve Fischer, views Prancercise as an unbeneficial attempt at getting couch potatoes up and moving. This type of exercise, as non-exhausting as it may seem, can be severely problematic for anyone who is not used to doing any type of exercise and prancing around with ankle weights cannot be determined as a healthy way to gain the benefits associated with exercise.

Personal Trainer

Although use of a personal trainer may not be for everyone, they are beneficial, safe and a healthy way of exercising for your specific needs. Passing fads whether it is jumping rope or trotting like a stallion, do not provide the encouragement, monitoring and specialization required for an exercise routine. Hiring a personal trainer can be one of the safest and most effective way to exercise. However, it is important that you verify with your physician that you are healthy enough to start an exercise routine and to be completely honest with your trainer regarding any health problems that may limit your exercise options.
