A noticeable lack of energy is a surprisingly common complaint among both men and women of all ages. For many, it doesn’t seem to matter what they do, they wake up feeling exhausted and it’s a feeling that fails to dissipate as their day wears on. While most blame their hectic schedules, a busy lifestyle is just one of many reasons that you can find yourself with a distinct lack of get up and go. I will now outline eight of the most common causes of constant tiredness.

Dependence on Coffee

There’s nothing quite like a cup of coffee for getting you moving in the morning but as any coffee drinker will tell you, the pick me up doesn’t last. Any kind of caffeine high is always followed by a crash and in most cases, you wind up feeling worse than you did before. In other words, in the long term, caffeine consumption can actually make you feel more tired, not less.

Late Night Drinks

Everyone knows that hangovers involve feelings of fatigue but did you know that you don’t need to binge drink in order to feel the effects the next day? Even having two or three drinks before you nod off can significantly degrade the quality of your sleep. It’s not uncommon for people with mild insomnia to try to mitigate the problem with a nightcap but unfortunately, the reality is that a tipsy slumber is never going to be a restful one.

Not Enough Exercise

If you’re feeling tired, the last thing that you’re going to want to do is strenuous exercise. Contrary to popular belief however, the more exercise you get, the less fatigue you’re likely to experience. Strenuous exercise gets your blood pumping and literally breeds energy. You don’t need to live at the gym either, even just three hours of exercise per week can make all the difference.


While there’s a number of different nutrient deficiencies that can lead to fatigue, one of the most common is a lack of iron. If you’re not getting enough iron in your diet, you can easily become anaemic which is capable of sucking the energy right out of just about anyone. Anaemia is particularly common among girls and vegetarians but that doesn’t mean that a meat eating male can’t also find himself anaemic. If you think that you might be suffering from anaemia, the answer is just a blood test away.

Bad Sleeping Environment

Another factor that can wreak havoc with the quality of your sleep is your environment. Are you sleeping in a comfortable bed? Is your bedroom too hot/too cold during the night? Is your bedroom quiet or are you regularly woken up in the middle of the night? Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter how many hours you sleep if something in your environment is keeping you from truly drifting off.

Too Much Stress

Stress is well known for its negative effects on the body and one of those effects is a tendency towards fatigue. In other words, worrying too much can tire anybody out. The best cure for stress related fatigue is obviously to relax more but for many people, this is significantly easier said than done. Options to reduce stress include breathing exercises, meditation and reducing the number/severity of your work commitments.

Sitting up straight isn’t just important for appearances, it’s important for fighting fatigue. When you slouch, it’s much harder for your muscles and joints to get the oxygen that they need. This results in more work for them and therefore less energy for you. In other words, if you spend most of your day lying on the couch or bed, it’s no wonder that you’re feeling so tired.

You’re Not Sleeping Enough

Finally, there’s the small matter of how many hours of sleep you get each night, contrary to popular belief, seven hours isn’t actually enough for everybody. Some people can survive perfectly well on between five and six hours per night, others however, they need at least eight if they want to wake up feeling energetic. If it’s been a while since you slept for longer than seven hours, try going to bed an hour or two earlier. You might be surprised by the difference that it can make.
