Does Blogging About Depression Hurt or Heal?

Blogging About DepressionIn treating depression, what works varies from person to person. Common techniques include counseling, changing your behavior, exercising, and taking medication. Most of the time, you’ll need to do a combination of things in order to start feeling better. Another very common method of depression therapy is journaling. Writing out your thoughts is a great way to help you work through them, and many people find that keeping a journal gives them an outlet to express themselves. Blogging is like a modern-day form of journaling. Keeping a blog gives you a place to vent your feelings while also sharing them with the world. Since blogging is so similar to journaling, is it another effective way to help ease your depression? Or could it do more harm than good?

Blogging About Depression

Expressing Yourself

If you use your blog as a way to journal about your depression, it might be no different than keeping a private, pen-and-paper journal. You can write the same things, and the only difference in its creation is a blog involves typing on a keyboard and a journal is done in your own handwriting. Whether or not this makes a difference in its effectiveness as a tool for dealing with depression is unknown. Some people might say that writing by hand adds an extra level of involvement and personalization that could be of greater benefit for working through emotions. Others may say it’s of no consequence what method you use to write out your feelings, that as long as you’re doing it it’s beneficial.

A Positive Hobby

When you start a blog, you can decide to put as much or as little effort into it as you like. It is your website, and you have complete control over it, including what you write and make public. A blog can become a creative outlet for you just as a journal can, and in this respect it has the potential to heal just as well. It is always good when dealing with depression to have a hobby because it gives you something to focus on and be proud of. If you enjoy putting the time and energy into your blog, it can certainly have a very positive effect on your mood because it’s something you enjoy. If you find that blogging helps you feel better, there is no harm in that.

The Potential for Harm

However, there are some concerns about blogging for depression that should not be taken lightly. When you’re suffering from depression, you may be particularly sensitive because you’re emotions can feel exaggerated and extreme. When you open yourself up on a blog, there is always the possibility that you’ll receive some negative feedback, especially from strangers. If you allow other people to read your most private thoughts, you may feel particularly hurt if someone reacts differently than you’d like. You cannot control what other people might say after reading your blog entries, so you might want to take steps to protect yourself if you’re concerned about how someone’s opinion might affect you. For example, disable comments on your blog and keep yourself anonymous. Or keep a private blog and only allow friends and family access to it. But in most cases, people who blog about their depression receive a great deal of support from others without any negativity. That support can be another great reason to blog about your depression as a way to heal.
