On April 16, 2013, The British Heart Foundation has posted on their website an article about how green veggies and beetroot can significantly decrease high levels of blood pressure. This was derived from a study written in Hypertension, the official publication of the American Heart Association. If uncontrolled, increased blood pressure can ultimately lead to a heart attack.

Fifteen participants were all it took to reach an acceptable conclusion. And it was just a matter of 24 hours for scientists to detect the positive effects of the experiment on the individuals.

According to the research, beetroot has an organic property known as nitrate which helps in maintaining and controlling blood pressure. Does the word “nitrate” has a familiarity to it? Well, for those who are experiencing chest pain or what is medically termed as angina pectoris, nitrate is their medication of choice in order to alleviate the symptoms of the condition. Nitrate is said to help in dilating or widening the blood vessels thus, contributing to an amiable flow of blood throughout the system.

Dr. Amrita Ahluwalia, one of the researchers, expressed her surprise on the significant effect of nitrate from beetroot on battling out with high blood pressure with so little intake. She hoped that improved cardiovascular health can be attained through the consumption of beetroot and green vegetables on a regular basis.

Professor Weissberg is certain that eating a lot of green leafy vegetables supports the presented case and advised health diet. A definite change in lifestyle and eating habits in order to achieve a normal blood pressure is required.

Apparently, two beetroots a day, keeps the cardiologist away. One can also opt to drink one glass of beetroot juice daily.  That is equivalent to 8 ounces or 250 ml. The process will be more effective if the person who is suffering from high blood pressure will also indulge himself in a green and healthy diet.

However, since the study was just created among a small number of people, the fact that beetroot and vegetables can be utilized as a long term solution to lower high blood pressure is still yet to be determined.
