People today want to stay as young-looking as possible, hence the abundance of skin care and anti-aging products in the market. The thing is, consumers are conditioned into thinking that any problems related to aging can be solved by these beauty products. While there is truth in this assumption, people will be better off if they practice a healthy lifestyle and avoid habits that can promote faster aging of the skin and the body in general.

The habits that we’re talking about range from obviously harmful to something you probably didn’t realize that will promote signs of aging.

Drinking, smoking, using illegal drugs

This is very obvious and doesn’t really need much explanation. Young people feel that they can get away with drinking and smoking a lot because the effects on the skin and the rest of the body are not immediately apparent. However, be assured that if you continue these habits for years, you will soon find your teeth yellowing, your skin turning sallow and losing its healthy glow, and your health rapidly deteriorating—possibly even before you reach your fifties.

Certain habits can age—and even kill—you.

 Indulging in fast food

Here is another no-brainer. Fast food is oil, sodium, and trans fat. This combination is utterly unhealthy, and when consumed in abundance, it will make for a very unhealthy body. For starters, you won’t be getting the nutrients your body needs to grow and perform vital functions properly.

Getting stressed

Stress is harmful to the body because it is more than just not having enough rest. It also affects your mental and emotional well-being, and the combination of these will make you look and feel older than your age. Plus, whenever you’re stressed, your body produces cortisol. This substance destroys collagen, which is essential for keeping your skin firm, elastic, and young-looking. High cortisol levels results in sagging skin, wrinkles, and other imperfections.

Rubbing your eyes

The skin around the eyes (especially the “bags” underneath) and on the eyelids are actually quite delicate. If you have a habit of rubbing them hard when you get tired, you’re actually promoting the formation of lines and wrinkles faster than you’d probably like. Rubbing may also damage your cornea.

Sleeping late

Always try to get eight full hours of sleep every night. Giving your body enough time to rest and recharge is extremely important. Notice how when you’ve only slept a couple of hours the previous night, you wake up with dark shadows under the eyes and pale, sallow skin. Lack of sleep won’t only make you look sickly, but it can also make you actually prone to sickness.

Pursing your lips

We’ve all heard about how smiling can make you look younger. It’s not just about having a bright and sunny disposition. It’s actually about your facial muscles. Frowning uses up more muscles than smiling. If you keep frowning and pursing your lips, your facial muscles will be stressed. Two problems can arise from this: the muscles will swell—making your face look bigger—and lines and creases will form sooner.

Forgetting the sunscreen

Global warming should be a concern for you; now more than ever. Staying outdoors from 10:00 in the morning to 3:00 in the afternoon will expose you to harmful UV rays, which will accelerate skin aging.

Eating too many sweets

High level of sugar in the bloodstream will bond with proteins to produce AGEs molecules (advanced glycation end-products).  AGEs are aptly named since like cortisol, they also break down collagen and elastin, accelerating the skin’s aging.

Eating too little fruits and vegetables

Besides containing essential vitamins and minerals essential for physical growth and vital bodily functions, fruits and vegetables also contain antioxidants. As we all know, antioxidants helps purge toxins and other harmful substances from the body. Lack of antioxidants will result in dull and unhealthy-looking skin, not to mention an unclean body.

Avoiding these Aging Habits

Given that all of the above are must-not-do’s, the solution would be to do the opposite of all of them. Avoid indulging in addictive yet unhealthy food and habits, eat plenty of healthful food, exercise regularly, lather on sunscreen (and moisturizer too!), and be mindful of the seemingly harmless habits mentioned above. Now that you know what you shouldn’t do, it will be easier to figure out what you must do from now on.
